Dating a teacher can be very different from dating someone who is in a different profession. Whether the person teaches at the elementary, middle or high school level is irrelevant. Teachers have a great deal of take-home work, as well as a number of responsibilities to the community that often exceed typical working hours. Teachers also must be aware they represent their school at all times, whether at a conference or at a popular dance club. These challenges can make dating a teacher a unique experience.

Instructions

    1

To date a teacher, it is important to be the right person. This means you cannot be one of the teacher's students or the parent of a current student. The National Education Association's Code of Ethics states teachers shall not use professional relationships with students for private advantage, and dating the parent of a student certainly falls into that category.

    2

Plan your date with a teacher carefully. Keep in mind that, during your date, the teacher may see members of the public with whom she works, such as school board members, students, parents and gossipy colleagues. Planning a date to go drinking at a club is not a good idea, as teachers are expected to maintain a professional image in their communities. This especially holds true in small towns. See a movie or play, dine out, bowl or do another activity that is wholesome and will not have the potential to embarrass the teacher in the community.

    3

Keep in mind people the teacher knows will wonder who you are. It is possible the teacher will be placed in the position of answering questions about your role in her life the next day when a student pipes up in class, asking: "Who was that man in the orange plaid coat you were with at the movies with last night? Did you kiss him?"

Dressing appropriately and behaving in a socially acceptable manner at all times will make a teacher you want to continue dating feel at ease.

    4

If you decide to continue dating a teacher, be aware that the teacher may not have many free evenings and weekends. She may be the yearbook sponsor or a cheerleading coach, and will need to attend after-school meetings and activities. She will also have work that she brings home to grade and may spend Sunday afternoons working on lesson plans.

Late-night activities on school nights are out when you are dating a teacher, so you may need to adjust to becoming somewhat of an early bird.
