How to End Overbearing Relationships

Ending a relationship is never a pleasant task, but sometimes it must be done. When one partner in a relationship is overbearing or asking too much of the other, ending a relationship can be particularly difficult.

Instructions

Communicate the problem(s) with your partner. The actual breakup should not be the first time your partner is aware of your concerns.

Prepare for logistical considerations. That is, make sure you have a place to live and store your things. This can be awkward if you and your partner are living together, as you don't want to signal your intent before the actual breakup.

Enlist your friends. Tell them what you plan to do to any friends who can be trusted, and ask for their help once the breakup occurs. Since your partner is overbearing, you want to make sure you have planned for jealousy or pressure post-breakup.

Choose the time and place of the breakup. Semi-public settings, such as a private area of a park, make it less likely for your partner to become overly emotional.

Communicate clearly. Even if your partner doesn't like what you have to say, make sure to be honest and open as to why the relationship is ending.

Don't back down. You decided to break up with your partner for a reason, and her pressure isn't going to change those reasons.

Cut your partner off, if need be. Explain why you aren't able to speak with her for the foreseeable future, and explain what -- if anything -- she could do to be welcome back into your life.
