How to Handle Seeing an Ex Unexpectedly

Whether you've moved on or not, seeing an ex unexpectedly can really put a thorn in your day. Handling the situation maturely and calmly can be difficult, especially if it was a recent breakup. Read on to find out how to handle this situation with ease so that it doesn't ruin your day or drudge up all of those old breakup feelings.

Stay calm. The last thing you want to do is make a big scene and show your ex that you're not over her. Keeping your cool is key to making sure the unexpected sighting doesn't turn into an unexpected brawl.

Be mature. This is not the time for name calling or for reliving the not-so-fun details of your breakup. Whatever happened is in the past, so leave it there.

Talk to him if you feel like you're able to have a polite conversation. If you're still furious with him and you know that you won't be able to stay calm, you have no obligation to stop and chat.

Smile and be upbeat. Tell her about the positive things going on in your life if you do decide to talk to her. Even if you don't feel too great at the moment, a positive attitude will show her that you're moving on, and it will make you feel good to let her know that you're not living in a depressive post-breakup state (even if you are).

Keep the conversation short if either one of you is still fired up about the breakup, but if it's been a long time since you broke up and you're both over it, chat as long as you both feel comfortable.

Exit the scene immediately if the breakup is still too fresh in your mind and you absolutely cannot handle talking to him. If just being in his presence upsets you, leaving without saying hello is perfectly alright. You're broken up, so your first priority is taking care of yourself, even if it means complete avoidance.
