How to Lose an Argument

When you know you are wrong and you hate to admit it, losing the argument gracefully will help give you the upper hand. No one likes to lose an argument, but we can't always win, so learn how you can lose and still be admired and respected by the opponent. Here is how.

Instructions

    1

    Don't get emotional. Stay objective. Look hard at what your opponent is saying. When you do so, you might actually begin to see things in another perspective, making it easier to concede.

    Concede to the point your opponent is arguing. You can say things like, "I can see your point,", or "I think you have persuaded me," or even "You might be right."

    Let your opponent know that he/she might be winning the argument. If they think they are winning, they will be less likely to annoy you by hammering the point over and over again.

    Keep your dignity even when you have realized you may be wrong. Don't let yourself get angry or frustrated, and even if you are feeling that way, don't let your opponent see it. Just stay calm and smile.

    Don't be condescending because your opponent will see that attitude, get annoyed, and have reason to continue arguing.

    Once your opponent realizes they have won the argument, they may be tempted to gloat in glory or celebrate their victory. Just stay calm, smile, and excuse yourself from the situation. Swallow your pride if you have to. Your opponent won't continue this behavior if you aren't paying attention and don't let him know it bothers you.
