How to End a Dysfunctional Relationship

Dysfunctional relationships come in all shapes and sizes. Dysfunction can involve cheating, lying, manipulation and other issues. It's not just about arguments, but about how each person in the relationship deals with the conflict. Both short- and long-term relationships can fall victim to unbeatable problems. Sometimes, the only solution is to end the relationship and move on.

Instructions

    1

Concentrate on the reasons why the relationship should end instead of focusing on the positive aspects of the relationship.Your romantic view may not match the reality. Dysfunctional relationships are painful and unhealthy. Feeling sad about a breakup may make you hesitate even when separating is the healthiest choice for both you and your partner.

    2

Spend time away from a partner who is causing stress. Being surrounded by supportive friends and family members can help a person gain clarity on their relationship. Even if the decision has been made to ultimately end the relationship, looking at problems with a clear head may help prevent problems in future relationships.

    3

Tell your partner it's not a healthy situation to be in any longer. Clarify that the relationship will be ending and offer reasons why without placing blame. Be prepared to deal with a negative reaction or long discussion about your decision.

    4

Allow plenty of time to make the decision. Breakups often don't end with a simple "goodbye" and walking away. When shared property, children or pets are involved, splitting up can be messy. Both people should sit down and discuss the details of the split.

    5

Ignore advice from friends and family. While others may have your best interests in mind, the decision to split -- and the way to split up -- should be up to you and your partner. Others can't possibly know the intricacies of your relationship.

    6

See a professional counselor. Breakups can be extremely burdensome, confusing and hurtful. Speaking with a professional may help your and your partner understand the realities of your relationship and what to expect during and it ends.
