How to Deal With a Possessive Guy

Having a possessive man proves counter to healthy relationships because you will be forced to deal with a lack of freedom and mental torture. This man will question your behavior, you whereabouts on a daily basis, and in some cases, invade your privacy on social media sites and cell phone texts. Do not be fooled that this is a normal part of love. It is rooted in deep problems inherent in the individual, including low self-esteem and insecurity.

Instructions

Learn to notice the signs of manipulation. For example, he may use his desire to be with you out of love as a reason to question your wanting to be with other men, even if they are friends. This is using the love of your relationship to manipulate you into canceling plans or avoiding certain friends. You need to nip this behavior in the bud. Don't fall prey to manipulation.

Explain that you need your breathing space. Make him understand that it is not healthy to spend all your time only with each other. This kind of suffocation will stifle the relationship. You both need to miss each other for the relationship to grow. Even plants need a break from water.

Help him understand that though friends and family are important to you, he will always remain the most important person in your life. A possessive man is insecure in your love for him. He needs to be reminded consistently that he is the only man in your life, even if you don't have any guy friends in your social circle.

Avoid giving an ultimatum in the beginning. It may prove to be enough to point out to your boyfriend that if he truly loves you, he will listen and work to improve his behavior.

Take a break if he continues to be a possessive person. This will be difficult if you love the person, but if you break off the relationship, he might realize that you cannot stay with a person who stifles your social life and denies you personal freedom.
