Some Ways to Bring People's Differences Out in the Open

When you're getting to know someone, chances are you wonder about some of your differences -- questions about that person's background, upbringing, values, religious beliefs and other characteristics. Whether you're establishing a new relationship or friendship, find out some of the other person's differences so that you can assess your compatibility. Differences can strengthen a relationship, but some issues -- such as values -- may need to be aligned in order for the bond to remain strong.

Ask Questions

A straightforward, no-nonsense way to bring other people's differences out in the open is to ask questions. If you want to get straight to the point, you can ask direct questions, such as: "What is your religion? What was your upbringing like?" Another approach, which is less like an interrogation, is to ask leading questions such as, "What holidays do you and your family celebrate?" The answer tells you the person's religion without your having to ask the question as bluntly.

Do Things Together

You can start to see what a person's differences are just by spending time together. For instance, when you go to the movies or to the park you, you can watch how the person interacts with others in public settings. The person's behavior may give you insight into some of his differences. This also goes for spending one-on-one time. The more things that you do together, the more exposure you have to bringing out the other person's differences.

Play Games

Bring out people's differences through games. You can play a game called "This or That," in which people take turns asking one another questions, such as: "Vanilla or chocolate?" "Is the glass half-empty or half-full?" "Dogs or cats?" The people playing must answer with the option they favor most, then ask the same question back to the other player. This lets people know what they have in common, and what their differences are.

Go Shopping

Financial disagreements are one of the leading causes of divorce. According to a December 2009 article in "The New York Times," the more couples argue about money, the more their risk of getting divorced increases. If you want to see how compatible or different the two of you are when it comes to handling money, go shopping. You'll be able to see how the other person identifies a bargain, whether she would rather save the money and not shop or her preferred method of payment. Such differences are important to get out in the open early in the relationship.
