How do I Talk to a Teenage Son About a Broken Heart?

Broken hearts are a part of growing up. When a broken heart happens to your son, talking to him with sensitivity can help him deal with the pain and sadness. Knowing beforehand what to say will make your conversations less awkward for both of you.

Avoid trivializing the pain he is going through. If your son is feeling the heartbreak, it means that the relationship was, and probably still is, important to him. Acknowledge that you know how much it must hurt and that you are sorry he has to go through it.

Skip insulting the ex. While you may be tempted to spew insulting remarks about the person that contributed to your son's broken heart, it won't do your son any good. He may also turn against you for insulting the person. Focus on discussing what matters---your son's heart and mind---instead of the ex.

Inform him that it will take time to get over a broken heart. Your son may feel that he needs to get over it right away in order to move on, but getting over a breakup doesn't have a set time frame. Let your son know he can take the time he needs but he must work to get through it.

Avoid being pushy. Skip the constant questions and relationship wisdom. He may tune you out completely. Let him know you're there when he needs you. Give him space, but make an extra effort to ask him how he's dealing with the breakup. Make time to talk whenever he needs to.

Encourage him to let stress out in a positive way. Exercise can help fight against sadness. Ask him if he wants new exercise equipment, or let him join a gym or participate in a sport.
