How to Tell if You're in an Emotionally Abusive Relationship

While emotional abuse may not cause immediate physical harm, it can take a serious toll on your mental and physical well-being. Emotional and psychological abuse from a partner can create self-doubt, damage your sense of worth, and lead to anxiety and fear. It is easy to tell if you're in an emotionally abusive relationship, but it requires honesty with yourself and willingness to change things for the better. Emotional abuse can damage not only your self-concept, but your future relationships as well.

Instructions

    1

Determine if your partner treats you differently in public and private settings. Emotionally abusive partners may be nice and doting in public while belittling you at home, criticizing you or damaging your self-esteem. On the other hand, you may be victim of public ridicule or blame in front of your friends or family.

    2

Look at how you and your partner handle money together. Emotionally abusive partners may be obsessed with money, making you account for every purchase or constantly give them money. If your partner uses money to cause guilt, stress or blame, you are being emotionally abused.

    3

Speak to your partner when he hurts your feelings or makes you uncomfortable. It is possible he does not realize that he is abusing you. Gauging your partner's reaction to your talk will help you tell if you're in an emotionally abusive relationship. A little criticism or arguing is normal, but if you are constantly worried about what to say, anxious about what your partner will think, or scared of repercussions of your actions, you are probably in an emotionally abusive relationship.

    4

Talk to your close friends and family about any issues you may have with the way your partner treats you. Sometimes emotions can blind you to the facts of your relationships. Having a third-party comment can bring mistreatment into perspective.

    5

Seek professional help from a therapist or other mental health professional. If possible, bring your partner to couples therapy to put things into perspective and improve your relationship.

    6

Get out of the relationship if you cannot change the abuse patterns. No matter how perfect your partner may seem, emotionally abusive relationships can seriously damage your psyche and even your health.
