Reality TV game shows that involve dating and relationships have been popular for decades. These dating games typically involve multiple dating candidates and one bachelor or bachelorette that chooses who to date. At times, these shows mix emotions with entertainment, and they sometimes produce winning results for participants' love lives.
The Dating Game
The Dating Game was a dating game show that first aired on the ABC network on December 20, 1965. It was the first of many shows created by Chuck Barris. The show paired a bachelorette with three bachelors who she could only speak to and not see in person. She then asked a series of questions to the hidden bachelors. At the end of the show, the bachelorette chose one of the participants to go on a luxurious date with. The gender roles would sometimes change, so a bachelor chose from available women. Numerous celebrities such as Kenny Rogers, Rip Taylor and Kathryn Minner appeared on the show.
The Bachelor
The Bachelor is a popular and dramatic dating game show with a similar concept to The Dating Game. The reality dating game revolves around a single bachelor trying to find a wife to propose to at the end of the show from a pool of 25 women. Each female competes for a rose, given after each single or group date and during Rose Ceremonies at the end of each episode. Each woman who receives a rose stays in the game; women who do not receive a rose must immediately go home. The final dates typically take place in exotic locations around the world and contestants meet each other's families. The show ends with the bachelor choosing between the two remaining women and usually proposing to the one he picks as his mate.
The show has produced two spin-offs as of August 2010: The Bachelorette, which reverses the roles so one woman chooses from a pool of 25 men, and Bachelor Pad, which is made up of game participants from past seasons of the show. The participants in Bachelor Pad compete not only for love but also for a $250,000 cash prize.
Other Reality TV Dating Games
Many dating game shows have followed the lead of The Dating Game and The Bachelor. The sometimes traumatizing show Blind Date was based on setting up two complete strangers on a date. Joe Millionaire, elimiDATE, and Flavor of Love are just a few more dating game shows that provide both entertainment and emotion from a variety of everyday people chosen to try to find love on TV.
