Spring might be the most romance-friendly season, but winter too makes a good case for itself. After all, who can resist cozying up to a loved one with a movie or enjoying a warm mug of mulled wine with that special someone as a snow storm rages outside? Picnics at the park might be great when the sun is shining, but they don't inspire the same romantic vibe as a date in a winter wonderland. With a little know-how, you can make winter your true season of romance.
Movie Night
Light the fire, fill the room with candles, crack open a bottle of wine and prepare for an evening of movie-watching mania. You don't have to pick a romance film--a horror movie will set the scene for a snuggle-fest and an action flick will get you both in a positive mood. Make an evening of it with a series box set--the entire Scary Movie or Godfather collection would work wonders.
Pub Magic
Check out your local pubs and find out which ones run open mic nights, poetry evenings, quiz nights or gigs with great local bands. A poetry night will bring both a touch of romance and humor to the evening. Laugh about the really bad readings and pen a love poem of your own to read out for a spontaneous touch. Alternatively, take to the open mic stand and impress your date with a song.
Ice Skating
Take to the ice and put your balancing skills to the test at an outdoor ice skating rink. Most major cities set up an ice rink during the winter months and these tend to be popular tourist attractions. Warm yourself up afterward with a hot chocolate and allow yourselves to be entertained by those show-off skaters that always rule the rink.
Sledding
Prepare for the sleigh ride of your life. Sledding is a sure fire way to build a connection on a date--there's a very good chance you'll be either laughing or crying by the time you're ready to leave. Start off on a gradual slope until you know your date's personal limits--you don't want to scare them off on the very first ride. Be sure to wrap up warmly--coats, gloves, scarves and ear muffs are all sleigh-date essentials.
Theatre
A trip to the theatre brings a touch of both fun and class to a date. Find out if your date prefers independent artistic endeavours or Broadway musicals--the wrong choice might turn out to be a costly mistake, although at least you'll have something to laugh about afterwards.
Comedy Night
A comedy night is a great way to add a splash of humor to a date. Pick between concert-hall shows by well-known comedians, mish-mash comedy clubs or, for a unique experience, a student comedy night in a pub. Just be sure not to sit in the front row if you don't want to be bombarded by embarrassing and personal questions that will make you both squirm.
Dinner with a Twist
Surprise your date with a horse-drawn carriage ride to a restaurant. Most large cities offer this as a tourist attraction and provide blankets for those cold winter evenings. A ride through the city or even just through the park will be a fun addition to a romantic meal.
Winter Walk
Wrap up warmly and head out for a winter walk. Pick a scenic route--coastal, beach, woodland or nature-reserve hikes are all great options. Be on the lookout for local flora and fauna to introduce a touch of ecological fun. Make a day of it and work up a sweat so that you enjoy your evening pub dinner all the more.
Christmas Market
If you're going on a date around Christmas time, be sure to head to a German market for a romantic taste of yesteryear. Warm, and giddy, yourselves with a gluhwein, hop on a white-knuckle fun-fair ride, try on silly hats, and take in the sights of the old-world winter wonderland scenes for a fun date that you're both sure to remember.
