How to Live Through a Breakup When You're Still Friends

Living through a breakup can be one of the most emotionally wrenching obstacles that you have to overcome in life. Your former life as a couple seemed like a series of shared experiences. Now suddenly single, your life may seem like a frighteningly blank canvas. However, staying friends with an ex can sometimes be of some comfort, as you know that this person isn't ripped from your life forever. On the other hand, staying friends with an ex means you get to see this person date new people and eventually be part of a new couple, something which can feel traumatic. However, there are certain measures you can take to ensure that you and your ex stay friends.

Take time to heal. Even if you were the one who broke off the relationship, you'll need time to adjust to life without your partner. Don't expect to be in contact regularly during the initial transitional period of a few weeks.

Express your need for an apology if you still feel hurt in any way. Hurt feelings from the past can prevent a friendship with an ex from blossoming. Don't bottle up these feelings, but communicate them to your ex.

Start new hobbies and interests when you hang out with your ex. For example, don't go to the same restaurant that you frequented as a couple. Try new places to establish new ground in your new life together as friends.

Don't talk about who you're seeing right away, until you both feel like the healing process is well underway. This can be a difficult thing to ascertain exactly, but if you start talking about the new people you're dating right away, you can risk hurting your ex quite badly.
