Having a sensitive boyfriend can be a plus when talking about life in general or his taste in films and books. An overly emotional man, however, can be troublesome -- as lack of control causes a variety of problems and hints at more underlying issues. A general loss of control is not considered appropriate, and people surrounding those who lose it are also judged harshly as being enablers. If he is otherwise in good health, has no addictions or allergies and If the relationship is a permanent one, it requires serious cooperative effort, up to -- and including -- seeking professional help.

- 1
Recognize there's a problem and zero in on what's behind it. Find out what triggers his emotional meltdowns and avoid them, if possible. Talk about the problem when circumstances are calmer. Seek a mutual understanding where you both recognize that his emotions are a problem and agree to work on the problem together.
2Pick your battles when he becomes upset. If he is overly emotional about certain parts of your life together, decide if it's worth arguing about to make him upset. For example, if you aren't enjoying his favorite movie, sit quietly until it's over and later share your opinion of it with a friend, instead of him. If you can't avoid the situation entirely, compromise instead. For example if he doesn't like a CD that's playing in the car, change it to something you both enjoy, rather than letting it escalate into a quarrel.
3Discuss the problems as discreetly as possible when they occur. If he acts out by being too upset or emotional in public, pull him aside and talk him down, if possible. If you are in a public place and do not want to make a scene, tell him that the two of you are going home and talk about it in private.
4Establish mutual trust enough that he has an open mind about working together to find a therapist who can either treat just him, or both of you as a couple. A person with emotional issues may have a number of problems, such as depression or personality disorders, that are best treated with drugs and therapy. Although you can help ease the problem in a supplemental role, as suggested by the therapist, you may not be able to solve the problem on your own without professional guidance.
