How to Handle a Confrontation With an Ex

It's hard to handle a confrontation with anyone, but to handle a confrontation with an ex is especially difficult. Feelings get in the way, discussions turn to arguments and things escalate quickly. Take steps to keep as calm as possible when you face a confrontation with your ex.

Instructions

Keep your cool even if your ex is screaming at you. Control your temper because it takes two to argue.

Explain your feelings calmly during the confrontation. People often say things they regret when they're angry. You can't take your words back, so think before you speak.

Listen to what your ex has to say. Instead of just hearing it, actually pay attention and listen. That way, you may understand where she's coming from and be able to handle the confrontation peacefully.

Avoid letting the argument get physical. Even though you're angry, you can't pick up a plate and chuck it at him, and he can't put his hands on you in an angry way. There are adult ways to handle a confrontation with an ex, and getting physical is not one of them.

Call the police immediately if you are fearful for your safety. Even though you may think you know him, confrontations can get heated quickly and a simple argument can escalate to violence.
