Relationships serve as a precursor to the ultimate commitment: marriage. Many of the same qualities that hold a marriage together for years play a necessary role in making any serious relationship work. While issues arise in even the strongest of relationships, the key to making the relationship last lies in finding a way to get through these issues. Keeping yourself and your significant other happy can prove difficult, but you have plenty of ways to help make it happen.

Honesty and Talking

Always remain honest and open about everything that happens each day. This type of honesty makes it easier to retain trust between each other. If you have a problem, bring it up nicely and talk about it with your significant other. Work together to find solutions rather than harboring resentments that will never go away. Talk about your goals and ambitions, your families and what happens at work. Always keep an open line of communication open so problems do not arise and a disconnect does not form.

Creativity

Keep things fresh together by always remaining creative. Come up with unique ideas, and make up games to play with one another. Go to places neither of you have ever been before, and enjoy sharing the new experience. Undertake a project together that requires close communication. Once finished, you will be able to share in the feeling of completion with each other. Make things for one another using your creative skills to show your adoration.

Listening

Whether things or going well or not, always listen to your significant other. If she is upset with you, listen to her side of everything and put yourself in their shoes. Think about what she is saying and how it makes you feel. Listen actively, and take steps to make it clear to your partner that you are paying attention. Ask questions to ensure you understand the point of view she is presenting.

Little Things

Keep doing the little things in your relationship that keep your significant other happy. Do not slack off on small things just because you have been together longer. Always maintain loving physical affection. Keep giving him compliments even after a long time of being together. Keep opening doors, getting random meaningful gifts and making him feel that the relationship is important to you. Surprise each other with events or plans you will enjoy.
