Unrequited love can be a painful emotion. It hurts to feel strongly for someone who does not return -- or no longer returns -- the feeling. One of the most common solutions is to avoid the object of your affections and allow distance to help your feelings fade. Sometimes, however, school, work or social commitments can make it impossible to avoid the person you care about. At times like these, there are still things you can do to help yourself get over painful feelings.

Change your routine. Even if you can't avoid seeing the person you have feelings for, find new activities to focus on. Don't let worrying about your unrequited love distract you from other things. You may have to force yourself to do this at first, but it will become automatic as time passes.
2Be realistic about your feelings. It's easy to criticize and blame yourself when affection isn't returned. The fact is that the heart is unpredictable; two people can get along well and think highly of one another, but that doesn't mean love always follows. Don't let yourself be discouraged.
3Spend time with friends. It's important to remember that the person you are thinking of isn't the only person in the world. Keeping in touch with friends reminds you that you are not alone.
4Be brave about seeing the object of your affections. Don't avoid him. It may be hard at first, but polite and behave as you normally would in, for example, a work situation.
5Be patient. Getting over love can be a long process, but it will happen eventually. In fact, chances are it will happen without you realizing it. Live your life to the fullest, focus on your other interests, and one day you'll look back and realize that you're over your former love.
