The beginning of any dating relationship can be very exciting. Even with the excitement of getting to know a new person it can sometimes be rather difficult to know exactly what to talk about and what to say. When this happens, there is a risk of long periods of uncomfortable silence. Because of this risk, it is advisable to prepare yourself before your date with ideas on topics to initiate, ensuring that you feel confident that the conversation will flow smoothly.
Travel
Ask your date questions about where he may have traveled in his life and what it was like, as well as what he liked about it. Travel is an excellent conversation starter when on a date. People tend to enjoy sharing information about exciting places they have been. Ask more questions as he divulges more information on the places he is telling you about. For example, if he tells you he went to Australia, ask him what parts of Australia he visited. If he tells you he was in Melbourne, ask him what he liked about it, what Melbourne is like, what types of things he saw there and what kinds of food he ate there. Allow the conversation to flow naturally.
Current Events
Current events are usually good and safe conversation starters. Staying informed about what is going on in your local area as well as around the world gives you many topics to talk about with your date. By tuning into your local news media, national news and international news media resources, you will be given a multitude of conversation starters. For example, you can talk about the latest movies that are coming out, or you can ask for the opinion of your date on different items, such as new proposed bills that have been headlining the news. By asking your date what their opinion is on any of these topics, your date will know you are interested in what she thinks and feels.
Common Musical Interests
Music is always a good conversation starter. Identify any common favorite musicians or musical groups that you both may enjoy. Once you have identified common likes, then you can ask more specific questions, such as what his favorite songs and albums are that this particular artist has out. Ask about concerts he has been to and talk about the ones you have gone to as well. This way you find out if you have interests in common.
Careers
Ask your date about her career. Asking about what she does for a living and listening to how she responds provides information to derive more questions from as you go along. Keep in mind that by asking questions, listening and elaborating on more specific questions as you get more information, you're letting your date know you truly are interested in her.
A Few Important Tips
1. Ask a lot of open-ended questions that require more than just a yes or no answer.
2. Be sure you do not ramble on excessively when you are asked a question. Instead, answer the questions you are asked and respond by asking him something in return on the same subject.
3. Make good eye contact with your date, leaning slightly forward while he is talking. This lets him know you are interested in what he has to say.
