How to Initiate a Relationship

Approaching someone and asking for a date may feel nerve-wracking, but Dr. Jeremy Nicholson of the "Psychology Today" website says that you actually have a better chance at "Yes" than you might think. Research data from Nicholson's article suggest that half of the strangers you ask on a date will give you a shot - that's a lot of potential new relationships. Put yourself out there, and if the apple of your eye doesn't give you the answer you want, take heart. Chances are that the next potential mate you approach would be happy to go out with you.

Get social. An article by Kyle Western in "Men's Health" magazine suggests you shouldn't just focus on meeting people of the opposite sex, but you should be open to meeting new male and female contacts outside of your usual social circle. The larger your network, the more likely you are to get hooked up through a friend's introduction or a blind date.

Try a new hobby, and get in touch with your community. "Men's Health" reports that volunteer placements, improvisational classes, farmer's markets, community festivals, parks and museums all present great opportunities to meet women. If you're looking to meet men, a "Cosmopolitan" magazine article says to try intramural athletic teams, the gym and political rallies.

Walk up and ask that cute girl for a date. Although witty banter and body language can help, you're more likely to get her number if you actually ask for what you want. You can ask while still playing it cool. For example, instead of saying, "Do you want to go on a date with me this weekend?" drum up a conversation first, then say something like, "Yeah, I agree, that movie looks like it could be amazing. Would you like to see it with me this weekend?"

Be yourself when you're out on a date. While this advice may sound like common sense, it's easy to tell a white lie to impress an attractive guy when you get caught up in the moment. If things don't go smoothly when you're letting your personality shine, chances are that he's not the one for you.

Pace yourself. In an article on the Dummies website, Dr. Kate M. Wachs warns against spending an entire weekend with your new sweetie if you'd only previously been seeing each other once a week. Increase the duration and frequency of your dates gradually.

Plan active dates to learn about your partner's hobby preferences and personality. Instead of a dinner date, consider yoga, dance lessons or rock climbing.

Keep your own life. Don't blow off friends and family just because you're starting something new and exciting. Instead, strive to spend quality time with everyone who's important to you.
