Decide on the behavior you want. You can't expect him to be able to pinpoint it when you can't. Figure out if it is something you want him to do or something you want him to stop doing.

Examine how reasonable the request is. All guys can learn to send word when they are running late, but expecting a guy to suddenly become an Olympic gold metal holder on the downhill slopes is highly unlikely.

Communicate the desired behavior to your boyfriend. Do this during a calm time, not a fight, and using a friendly tone. Don't make this a "we have to talk" situation unless the behavior is major.

Set a standard. Make a promise to yourself about what will happen if he does not follow through. Decide if this behavior is a deal breaker, or what other things you might not be willing to do for him if he won't compromise for you. This is not an extortion or deal making step. He should not know you have set this penalty.

Watch his behavior. He gets 1 shot to mess up for little things, and none for major. If he messes up a little thing, remind him again that you do not enjoy this behavior. Do this calmly, once. If the behavior is major, or happens more than once, enforce your penalty.
