Most of your relationships will end. You will likely know when you are in a relationship that needs to end, as you will feel bored, unhappy and generally ready for something new. This means you are going to need to dump your boyfriend. There are a number of ways to do this, but the key is to be honest, forthright and keep it quick. It's never going to be pleasant, so the quicker you get it done, the better it will be.
Groundwork
One good way to dump a guy is to make sure you lay groundwork beforehand. If you keep a lot of things at his house, you should slowly start taking it out. If you live with him, you should set up a new place to stay before you break up with him. If you spend a few days doing this, the breakup itself will be easier, because the "maintenance" of the breakup will already be taken care of. You won't have to go back to get your things or do other painful, necessary activities that prolong the pain of the breakup. This will make it easier on both of you.
Short and Face-to-Face
Telll him quickly and efficiently that you don't want to see him any more. You shouldn't get sucked into a long explanation, and don't tell him every single thing he's done wrong. This is just painful and mean, and it won't lead to anything good. So, just tell him you are no longer happy and that you don't want to be in a relationship anymore. You don't really have to explain yourself much more than this.
Privacy
Break up with him in his house. This is a good way to break up with him, because it is his comfort zone. When you leave for good, he'll still be in his house, surrounded by things he's familiar with. Breaking up with him in public will just humiliate him and make him feel small, then leave him with a long walk or drive home to think about what just happened.
Him First
A good way to dump a guy is to tell him first. Don't tell your friends, don't tell your roommates, and do not tell his friends. If he hears it from them, he will build it up in his mind, and the actual breakup will be that much worse. Remember, your goal is to end the relationship as effectively as possible, and the more you draw it out, the less effective your breakup will be.
Cliche Avoidance
"It's not you, it's me," "I just need time to myself," and other such commonly used phrases are commonly used for a reason. It's because they really do apply to a lot of people. However, if you use one of them, it will seem like you didn't put much thought into the breakup and rather, are just regurgitating what you saw in movies. So, make sure you don't say these things. Apply your reasons to your individual situation and rephrase the cliches so that they are clear and personalized.
