Options for Leaving a Long-Term Relationship

Finding the right option to end your long-term relationship helps you end it on your terms. The end of a long-term relationship is an emotionally trying experience, but you have options for how to carry out your break up. You can discuss an amicable separation with your partner, seek a therapist who can help both of your work through any remaining problems or sneak away from your relationship, if you are worried about your safety.

Amicable Break

    An amicable break from a long-term relationship involves a long discussion with your partner, where you explain your feelings and your desire to end your relationship. It gives you the chance to share your feelings about your partner and listen to his opinion. It also allows you to discuss the division of your possessions. While this discussion can be emotional, it is an opportunity for you to confront your partner and give him a chance to discuss how to carry out the breakup. Listen to your partner and be understanding about his emotional response. Make your point clearly, explaining the reasons that you are no longer happy in your relationship. An amicable break gives you and your partner the best chance for a clean break.

Get out and Go

    If you have been the victim of abuse in your relationship, leaving secretly and as soon as posisble may be your best option. Gather your essential possessions, medicine, jewelry and personal irrecoverable items -- while you are alone in the house -- and move them to a safe place. If you are married, file for divorce through your attorney. Let your attorney handle all of the face-to-face meetings with your spouse, and inform your attorney that you feel unsafe around your spouse.

Start a New Relationship

    Some people, when ready to end a long-term relationship, start a new relationship with another partner instead of speaking to their current partner. While this approach can end your current relationship, it can also leave your partner to deal with additional hurt feelings and create an uncomfortable situation between both of you. This approach can complicate your breakup, as your partner can develop feelings of anger and resentment.

Therapy

    A therapist serves many purposes in a relationship. Among these is the ability to help you and your partner work through your breakup. A therapist can help you and your partner work through any residual hurt feelings or emotional trauma. If you are already seeing a family therapist, tell him that you intend to end the relationship and ask him to work with both of you during the breakup. Otherwise, you can find a therapist who specializes in family therapy or relationship counseling in your hometown.
