Loving your boyfriend's dog may be a challenge for you. You may have personal issues with dogs; perhaps you have been attacked by one or have never grown up with one in the household. Whatever the case, you may wish you loved your boyfriend's dog, especially if the creature is dear to him. Loving the furry animal may just be a matter of time, an open mind and a little shift in perspective.

Talk to your boyfriend about your struggles. While your boyfriend's dog may be his life, you may have hidden feelings of jealousy, resentment or confusion. Attempting to talk to your boyfriend about these feelings will help bring them to light and make you feel better. Explain why you are having a hard time loving the dog; perhaps you feel like your boyfriend spends more time with the dog than he spends with you or that he would break up with you before letting go of the dog. Be honest, straightforward and clear.
2Listen to your boyfriend's perspective. After talking to your boyfriend about your struggles, listen to what he has to say without interruption. Perhaps he never knew that you struggled so much with loving the dog and now wants to put extra effort into hanging out with you more than his dog. Maybe he has grown up with this dog and simply cannot picture life without it. Whatever the case, the act of listening to your boyfriend will make him want to listen to you and help you with the feelings you are struggling with.
3Spend one-on-one time with the dog. The only time you may spend with your boyfriend's dog is the time the two of you are together. Make some room in your schedule to hang out with the dog alone and get to know it. You may feel threatened by the dog because you feel that it doesn't like you or want to be around you; however, playing with it and petting it or rubbing its tummy may help both of you warm up to each other.
4Be honest throughout the process. Learning to love is always difficult, and you may feel like it is impossible for you to ever love your boyfriend's dog. However, don't lose heart; being honest and open about your struggles will make it easier for you to love your boyfriend's dog. If you feel frustrated with the dog, simply give yourself some space and don't beat yourself up for struggling. You are doing the best you can for the sake of your boyfriend, and the process may take time.
