How to Get Stuff Back After Splitting Up

Splitting up is always difficult, especially when you have to get your stuff back. Feelings are often still raw at this point, and you might be unsure about ask for your things. There is a protocol to follow that may make this interaction easier on both of you.

Instructions

Pack their stuff first. Make a list of the things that you want back. Call your ex and respectfully let them know that you have their things ready for them, and you have a list of the items you want back.

Mention to your ex that you are interested in exchanging things so that you can both move on and deal with your emotions. This is an important step in the breakup process.

Follow up with an e-mail or letter if you haven't received a response in a week. Keep copies of these letters in case you end up using Step 5. If you send a letter, you have the option of purchasing Delivery Confirmation or Signature Confirmation. Remain as respectful as possible. Ask if you can arrange to exchange items at a neutral place if possible. This might make you feel more comfortable.

Attempt to make contact once a week. If you have received no response after a month or two, consider legal action.

Contact a lawyer if you have exhausted all other options. Be aware that this will cost money, so weigh the value of your stuff with the price you will have to pay a lawyer. Alternatively, you can take your ex to small claims court.
