How to Recover After Relationship Problems

A failed relationship can still sting long after it has ended. When there were problems in your past relationship, it can feel like a failure to break up. You need to take care of yourself to help recover from this event in your life, and to watch out for the same mistakes in your next relationship. These tips will help you feel better and focus on healing instead of letting the pain linger on. Anyone can recover from a problem relationship, they just need to take it one step at a time.

Instructions

    1

Take care of yourself. Eat healthy and exercise to help boost your mood and keep your self-esteem high.

    2

Confide your feelings to a journal, a friend or a family member. Don't hide your emotions. They're normal and you need to express them.

    3

Avoid as much stress as you can. Give yourself time to recover, and let others take over stressful tasks for you.

    4

Focus on one day at a time and don't force yourself to move on. Allow it to happen naturally, and avoid dwelling on the past when possible. Letting out your emotions is healthy, but when you start thinking about your ex and feeling depressed, you should distract yourself with a hobby or activity you enjoy.

    5

Make a list of what you've learned from this relationship and how you can avoid those problems in your next relationship. If your partner did things that hurt your feelings, avoid people like that for your next relationship.

    6

Seek counseling if you are extremely depressed, feel hopeless or can't move on even after time has passed. A therapist can help you learn to manage your emotions in a healthy way.

    7

Date casually when you feel ready. Don't pressure yourself to find a relationship, and do not date someone simply because you feel lonely. Allow this to help distract you from your ex, and you just might meet someone you do fall for.

    8

Do not go back to your ex. The relationship ended for a reason and it is not worth fixing. Your emotions are telling you that you need that person in your life, but your brain knows the truth. You do not need your ex anymore.
