How to Let Go of a Broken Relationship

The relationship is over but you can't seem to face that fact. Some relationships are meant to last a lifetime while others simply are not. It is important to realize when to let go and move on. Some relationships are on self-destruct. They simply aren't healthy. They can wear you down physically, mentally and emotionally. People often jump into relationships too quickly before they really know the other person or the situation they are getting into. Love is often confused with infatuation. Relationships based on infatuation usually don't last once the infatuation wears off. Learn how to let go of your broken relationship and move on with your life.

Instructions

Admit That It's Over

    1

Acknowledge the fact that the relationship has ended. People often go into denial after their relationship breaks up. They refuse to admit that it's over. They say things like, "He'll be back," or "She can't make it without me." Don't delude yourself. You'll only make the situation worse and it will be harder to accept the fact that she is not coming back. Acknowledge and accept that the relationship is over. That's the first step in getting over a broken relationship.

    2

Limit contact with your ex-partner. Don't call, show up at his house or apartment or wait outside his place of employment. These are acts of desperation. First of all, you are not desperate. There are plenty of potential partners in the world to choose from. Secondly, you don't want to appear desperate. Even if you and your ex parted on good terms. limit contact with him at least for a while until you are completely over your romantic feelings for that person.

    3

Avoid getting into another relationship on the rebound. Chances are it won't work. You'll simply end up feeling worse and hurting someone else in the process. Give yourself time to fully recuperate from your broken relationship before getting involved again.

    4

Surround yourself with supportive friends who can help take your mind off of your broken relationship and help you to move forward with your life. Go out with your friends and have fun. Don't sit around the house and dwell on the past. Stay active and enjoy your new-found freedom.

    5

Realize that everything happens for a reason. Some people just aren't meant to be together. If your relationship is meant to work, it will. If not, it won't. There are relationships that break up and then the couple reunites years later. Don't dwell on the break up. Let it go. If you are really meant to be together, love will find a way.

    6

Learn from your mistakes. It takes two to make a relationship or to break one. Analyze your part of the responsibility for the failure of the relationship and learn from those mistakes. Were you too jealous or controlling? Did you work too much or not enough? Could you have been more romantic? How can you improve? No one is perfect and no one is to blame for everything that goes wrong in a relationship but it is important to realize how you can better yourself. Once you've come to terms with yourself and the break up of the relationship you're ready to move forward.

How to Keep a Relationship Healthy and Strong

How to Keep a Relationship Healthy and Strong

Are you new to experiencing relationships? Well let me give you advice on having a healthy and possibly long-term relationship. No matter how much in love you are with them, or the passion you and your partner may have. Any relationship takes work and commitment from both partners.

Instructions

    1

Be an honest person with them. Do not hide things from them, do not lie. Don't be afraid to say things that isn't very flattering about yourself. Getting them to trust you is the most important element in any relationship. If there's no trust, there's nothing there. So please be honest and they'll learn to open up to you.

    2

Make sure the communication is good. This goes along with trust, but always communicate how you feel. Even if it's something that upsets you. Instead of screaming, or assuming, talk to them. Open up to them. If they did something that rubbed you the wrong way, tell them about it in a respectful manner. There's going to be times, where their actions might effect you in a bad way. It's important to communicate this to them, not keep it bottled up. It's important to communicate the good things as well. Being on the same page, is how to maintain a lasting relationship.

    3

Make sure you give them respect.

Now respect isn't just simply treating her or him nicely. There's a lot more to it. Like respecting their feelings and trying to understand what they are. Maybe they're sensitive, so you have to know something like that. You have to learn to adjust to their liking. Basically, learn to study your partners moods, wants, and needs. Don't just think about what you want out of the relationship, think about what your partner needs out of it as well.

    4

Make sure you treat others right.

There's nothing that makes your partner feel good, when not only you're good to him or her, but you are GOOD to people around you. This shows them a lot about who you are. That you are a person that understands people and can trust that you're the real deal. If you aren't nice to others, then they'll feel you might not be nice and treat them well in the long-term. That sets off signs to them that aren't very good.

    5

Show them your personality. Don't be afraid to be bold, blunt, or the show them the interests you have. At the same time, take note of their interests as well. Remember things they tell you, because it does matter. If they feel you don't focus on them, that can take a nasty turn later down the road.

    6

Make sure you are encouraging to your partner.

Always be willing to help them and give them honesty and positivity at the same time. Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. This is an important step in a relationship. Accountability is key in a relationship. Your partner has to be able to count on you when needed.

    7

Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it's the secret to a lot in life. It will keep the sparks alive. Laughter keeps the stability in the relationship strong and lasting. Laughter will never let the relationship go stale.

    8

Spend time with them. Don't start to neglect them and make them feel unwanted. I know it's hard to spend time with someone 24/7, but still go out of your way to make sure you're keeping up with them. The relationship takes work.

Signs a Man Is Never Going to Change

Signs a Man Is Never Going to Change

If you're in a relationship with a man and you want to change his behavior, you need to come to terms with the fact that you're not going to be able to do so. Men, like women, have certain aspects of their personalities set in stone, and although it is possible to change these aspects in the short term, they will generally revert back in the long term. Be on the lookout for key aspects of his personality to understand which parts of your man you can change and which parts you can't.

Enabling

People often do things that they are allowed to get away with. After all, if there's no reason not to do something, there's no reason for a man to change. So first ask yourself if you are tacitly encouraging certain behaviors. All men, women, children and most animals change their behavior to respond to stimuli. If a man consistently texts you at 3 a.m. to see if he can stay over, then you don't hear from him for another week or two, he is not going to change this behavior until you stop responding to his nocturnal messages.

Big Picture

Certain small behaviors may change over time. A man may have left sandwich things out when you first started dating, but years of you berating him may have finally convinced him to put the mayonnaise away. But this doesn't change the fact that he either doesn't care as much about this kind of thing as you do or is focused on other things. It is possible to change small behaviors, but it is not really possible to change the larger behaviors that govern them. So if a man consistently leaves mayonnaise out, and then after you finally get him to start putting that away, he starts leaving orange juice out, you can take this as a sign that, in general, he's always going to leave things out.

Consistency

Although it is possible to change some behaviors, others are simply set in stone. If you've been dating a man for five years, and every two weeks you fight with him about the same issue, come to terms with the fact that this is who he is. There are certain aspects --- positive and negative --- of people's personalities that do not change, and if you have tried to change them with little to no success, accept that you are never going to be able to change them and move on.

The Past

Ask a man's old friends or his family if they have ever seen him exhibit certain annoying behaviors. Obviously, only ask about relatively minor things --- like leaving his bed unmade for days at a time or putting his shirts on inside-out --- and you should only ask these questions once you've been dating for a while. However, if a man's old friends or his family confirm that he has been doing these things since he was young, come to terms with the fact that he always will do them. If his family, friends, roommates and previous girlfriends couldn't change his behavior, you probably won't be able to.

Signs & Symptoms You're in an Abusive Relationship

Abusive relationships can often be hard to diagnose for the person in the situation. If any of these signs or symptoms sound familiar, you may be a victim of an abusive relationship.

Excuses

You find yourself making excuses for his or her reprehensible behavior such as lying, cheating or stealing from you.

Separation

You've found that you've slowly lost contact with friends or family; contact may have been lost at the potential abuser's request.

Jealousy

Your partner becomes extremely jealous and angry when you speak with anyone of the opposite sex. He may also question you incessantly about any interactions you've had with the person in question.

Self Esteem

Your partner may try to convince you that no one will want you but her. She may try to belittle you and lower your self esteem to make you feel like no one else wants you.

Physical Abuse

Your partner hits, kicks, punches, slaps or chokes you and then apologizes for it almost immediately. Abysers often try to place the blame on the person being abused, saying that "You made me do it."

Getting Help

Start by talking to a trusted family member or friend. Create an emergency plan and pack a bag with important items to have them on hand at short notice. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for more tips and advice at 800-799-7233 or 800-799-SAFE.
