How to Deal With a Disrespectful Man

Disrespect is rude or abusive behavior that communicates contempt not only for you but perhaps for women in general. Confront a disrespectful man immediately and do not give him the benefit of the doubt. Let the man know that type of behavior will not be tolerated.

Instructions

Confront disrespectful behavior immediately. You do not have to be shrill, demanding or abusive -- just point out that the behavior is unacceptable to you. If someone you are dating is looking at other women, for example, say in a quiet, calm voice: "It is impolite to look at other women when you are out on a date with me. Please do not do it anymore." It is important in the beginning of a relationship to set the ground rules as to what behaviors are unacceptable, because the longer the behavior persists, the harder it will be to change.

Do not let the man argue or negotiate with you. Your feelings are valid and you should never have to tolerate behavior that is disrespectful, even if the man claims not to share your viewpoint. Keep repeating like a broken record, "I understand you have different feelings about this, however your behavior is disrespectful to me and I need you to stop."

Practice assertive body language. Sometimes men are disrespectful to women because they feel threatened or inferior. The disrespect is designed to put you in your place by intimidation. Allowing a man to overpower you in this way is not healthy for the self esteem of the man or yourself. Show him you are not scared. Face him directly, look him in the eyes and remain calm. These nonverbal gestures send a strong message.

Realize that confrontation alone will not change a man's behavior toward you if he does not view a woman as his equal. This is not your problem; it is his issue that will hinder all his future close relationships as well. If your relationship with him is casual, it's best to end the relationship and find a more respectful partner. If you are married or committed to him, ask that he seek counseling to work through his issues. If he refuses, give serious thought to ending the relationship.

Seek counseling if you are unclear what constitutes disrespectful behavior, or you feel you in any way deserve this kind of treatment. Sometimes past relationships can leave emotional scars that need to be worked out in therapy.

Ways to Get Over an Ex-Girlfriend

Successful relationships make both partners feel happy, fulfilled and loved. If your girlfriend is no longer making you feel these things and the relationship is not meeting your needs, it could be time to move on. Getting over an ex-girlfriend can take time and be very painful and difficult, but there are ways to make the process a bit easier.

Spend time with friends and family in the days, weeks and months following the end of the relationship. Take the time to reconnect with other important people in your life and do things you enjoy. The period after a breakup is an excellent time to pursue new hobbies, take a new class or focus on projects or other activities for which you may not have had time when you were dating. Take the time to re-prioritize what is most important to you and reflect on your goals.

Remember the reasons why you broke up in the first place. It is tempting to glorify the relationship or continue to put your ex-girlfriend on a pedestal, but there is a reason the relationship did not work out. Dwelling on the good times will only make it more difficult to move on. Think about the disagreements you had and the events that led up to the breakup. Doing so will help you to put into perspective why this happened and the positive side of it.

Do not contact her or go to places she typically frequents. Eventually, you may be able to be friends, but initially, assorted emotions can make running into her difficult. Throw away anything that reminds you of your ex. It may be difficult to let go of your past, but having reminders of her will only haunt you and make your situation harder.

Give yourself time to heal. Breakups are difficult and it is important to allow yourself to feel the emotions and grieve the loss of someone who was significant to you. If you find that you are having a hard time coping or are getting depressed, seek out a mental health professional who can help you work through this difficult time in your life. When the time is right, get back into the dating world and give relationships another chance.

How to Reinvent an Image After a Breakup

Breaking up when in a relationship can be very traumatic to a person. However, it doesn't have to be. By setting goals for yourself you'll be able to get over the breakup easier than if you sat and sulked. Take these tips in order to reinvent yourself after a breakup.

Change your attitude and outlook on life. Be positive and confident about yourself. It may be hard and feel awkward at first, but give it a try and it'll get easier. Remember that a smile feels better than a frown.

Find a gym and exercise or do it at home. There are many places that offer aerobic or swimming classes. Try one and you may find you like it. You'll also be able to meet new people when you go out and try new things.

Get a makeover and a new wardrobe. Getting hair and nails done always makes a girl feel better, but new clothes can make you feel fabulous. Donate clothes you no longer wear to a charity or give them away to friends. Find a new style that might suit you better. Ask for advice from friends if you aren't sure what style to try.

Be yourself, not a fake. Your true colors will show if you pretend to be someone you aren't. Just because you reinvent your attitude, doesn't mean you need to change who you are on the inside.

How to Break the Bond of a Bad Relationship

Childhood experiences can make it difficult to have healthy adult relationships. Breaking a bad relationship bond can be done if both people are willing to examine their role in the relationship and work on relating to one another in a more positive manner. However, sometimes a relationship can be so toxic that the best thing both people can do is part ways and take positive lessons from the relationship.

Instructions

Identify the qualities that cause the relationship to be bad. Before you can break a bad relationship pattern, you must know exactly what problem(s) need to be fixed before you can address each one with an appropriate solution. Identifying the bad qualities in your relationship requires both you and your partner to conduct an honest inquiry, alone and together, into what you both bring to the table that is contaminating your relationship. If you are in a codependent relationship (e.g., your partner is an addict and you enable the addiction) it may be hard to admit how you contribute to the negative dynamic, but telling yourself the truth about the relationship is key. You cannot change what you fail to acknowledge.

Talk to your significant other and determine whether the bad parts of your relationship can be fixed. A bad relationship is not always doomed; if the two people involved desire to change their behavior and their way of relating to one another, the problems they are experiencing can be a growth opportunity. However, fixing a bad relationship takes commitment, and if both parties are not united in their desire to remain together, separating may be a better option. Seeking assistance from a therapist or another independent party can be helpful when trying to maintain the relationship while working through problems.

End the relationship if you decide that the bad aspects of your relationship cannot be fixed. There is no magic trick for ending a bad relationship other than to do it sooner, rather than later, and take one day at a time. Allow yourself to grieve for the parts of the relationship that made you happy while remembering the aspects of the relationship that you do not desire to repeat in future relationships. Do not enter into another relationship until your feelings from the prior relationship are resolved. When you do begin another relationship, take things slowly and pay attention to signs. Red flags often appear in the beginning of a relationship when it is easier to avoid a bad bond, rather than enduring a relationship plagued by problems and an ensuing break-up.
